Guided Reading Level L
Level L marks a big shift in material. Many texts are longer chapter books with only a few illustrations. The pictures provide much less support. More characters are involved in the plots, and there are more sophisticated language structures, more detail, and more description. Stories are more involved,and the vocabulary is challenging.Text size is smaller and word spacing is narrower.
In general, the texts require higher level conceptual work to understand the subtleties of plot and character development. Reading a book must be sustained over several days and is supported by group discussion during and after. Reading will be primarily independent, mostly silent but with some parts reads aloud for emphasis or interest.
